Here’s your mini vacation: 32 seconds in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This floating village is located on the Tonle Sap river and lake system near Siem Reap. It is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. In addition to being home to many communities, this lake is a valuable resource to the country. The fish caught within these waters comprise nearly 60% of Cambodians’ protein intake.
Should you ever visit, guided tours (like this one) are available. You will see people jumping in the water to swim or bathe, children floating in bowls, propelling themselves with large wooden spoon-like tools. There’s a store, a school, a church and more. Expect to be approached by beggars and children with snakes draped around their necks, who will allow you to take a photo in exchange for a tip. You can even pose with the snake, should you be so inclined.
The locals are friendly, and will smile warmly and wave to you excitedly as you enjoy your visit.
