Apple Blossom Drive: Scenic Byway in La Crescent, Minnesota

Right around Mother’s Day every year, Apple Blossom Drive in La Crescent, Minnesota earns its name.

This year, however, unseasonably warm temperatures brought on an early bloom. So while you may have dreamed of taking Mom for a relaxing drive on the 17-mile scenic byway to take in the panoramic beauty of the area, you’ll have to come up with a plan B this year. The La Crescent Chamber of Commerce says the bloom came about three weeks ago.

For those unfamiliar with Apple Blossom Drive, the road winds by the Mississippi River, through farmland and countryside and up the area’s commanding bluffs, to offer scenic overlooks and close encounters of the apple tree kind. This drive alone illustrates why La Crescent has been dubbed the “Apple Capital of Minnesota.”

Luckily for those of us who missed this year’s show, we can feast on photos of blooms past. Hopefully these will pacify us until the apples are ripe and ready to enjoy.
