Random Travel Pic of the Week: Mississippi River, La Crosse, Wisconsin

The Cass Street Bridge (now two bridges, with the addition of the “arch” shaped bridge in recent years), offers a dramatic entry from La Crescent, Minnesota into the city of La Crosse, Wisconsin. From a distance, it’s reminiscent of the sun over the bluffs.

In the foreground, swimmers step into the cool waters of the Mighty Mississippi River, its current swirling around their ankles.

This is summer in La Crosse: lush and green–albeit a bit dry this year–and centered around the beautiful river that arguably defines our region. For those of us who have grown up near the Mississippi, it’s easy to take the river for granted, until it’s flood season and you find water in your basement. Yet it’s important to remember that the Mississippi River draws visitors to the region every year, some of whom wait with anticipation much of their lives for the chance to set their thirsty eyes upon her.
