Mini Vacay: Old Faithful, Yellowstone National Park

Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’. Photo by Patricia Balsley.

When it comes to predictability, particularly with geothermal features, perhaps nothing beats Old Faithful. Every 91 minutes or so, she lets loose. Maybe the only thing that is more predictable is that thousands of tourists will gather around the circular benches, a comfortable distance from the steam and blazing hot water, to watch her do her thing.

Old Faithful gets all the fame, but Yellowstone has so many other geothermal features worthy of your attention and just as much wonder: geysers, bubbling pits of mud, hot springs, and much more.

For today, you get to take your mini-vacation among the tourist throngs and enjoy this bit of Americana. It’s just a few seconds, and my camera struggled with its focus, but at least for a moment you can experience it.

Arguably just as awe-inspiring are the many other geothermal wonders in the park. Here are just a few – from bubbling mud pits to hissing hot springs and other, less predictable geysers.

Sure, Old Faithful gets the bulk of the attention. The glam. The national television appearances. The fiber product commercials.

But for my money, there’s much more to see at Yellowstone than Old Faithful. Plan to spend the day.
