From Couch to 5k…and Machu Picchu?

I’ve been hearing a lot about this “Couch to 5k” app these days. I know it’s made a difference for some of my friends who want to get into shape. But I need something more.

Is there a “Couch to Machu Picchu” app?

Months ago, Rollerbag Mister and I found a rock-bottom airfare to Peru, which was impossible to resist. When I booked the trip, I thought I’d take the train in to the ancient Incan ruins, like the rest of the fleshy American travelers who would rather not work for it. (I freely admit this character flaw, and do not mean to offend anyone who isn’t ready to embrace this level of self-awareness.)

I got a text from one friend who encouraged me to do the hike. I felt irritated. I knew it would be hard work, and I didn’t feel like doing it. I’ll eat a guinea pic roasted over a grungy outdoor grill,  but hiking? Camping? Carrying my gear? Phooey.

I prefer sleeping in a comfy bed and wearing my heels by day as I stroll leisurely down quaint, cobblestone streets. A rollerbag requires a road; I am not a pack animal.

Yet here I am, trading in heels for hiking boots. Six weeks from now we’ll try to conquer a 4-day marathon-distance hike at high altitude, our gear on our backs. With the help of a personal trainer, I’m trying to get comfy with breathing hard, to maximize my lung capacity. I’m lifting weights and spinning, heaven help me. I’m trudging through snow-covered bluff trails with Rollerbag Mister and Rollerbag Hound in frigid temperatures.

It isn’t easy. And it isn’t really me. I’m terrified. I’m still fleshy. Sometimes I cry.

For any RBG who’s been there, I welcome your tips!
